Helena Nicolau
At her boat in the Bay of Pollença, Mallorca.
Helena is a jewelry designer from Palma de Mallorca, and her background studying interior design has influenced her creations in many ways. The diversity of her collection is intriguing, and ranges from simple little chains to the most eccentric and colorful necklace compositions. There is a recognizable trait in everything she does, clearly influenced by her passion for the island of Mallorca. She employs elements of dreamlike underwater scenes, populated with marine motifs, from static shells to seahorses.
Helena is full of electric energy, and on her boat our conversations revolve around the connection to the Bay of Pollença, where we both enjoyed many summers growing up. I have known Helena for almost 30 years, and what has always stayed with me is her gorgeous smile and her positive outlook. Her creative soul and her interest in fashion have helped her develop the brand, while she and her husband have welcomed their beautiful children into the world. She decided to make herself available 100% for her kids' care, making her creative venture a little more challenging.
One place that allows the couple to connect to the surrounding natural paradise is the preciously-restored 1930s 'llaüt' boat which used to belong to their kids' great grandfather. Every day after work, the family sails out to sea, until nightfall makes it too dark to stay anchored by the Fortaleza, a jewel property that has presided over the unique Pollença seascape for decades. 'The Frescachón' is their pride and joy, and they tend to it with a love that one might associate with an inherited treasure. Helena feels that things have been changing for her lately, and her creative approach is nudging her towards, perhaps, a more mature output. In the meantime, I can only wait patiently to see what she will come up with next.
